The Chicago Bears will be without running back Kyle Monangai for Sunday's Week 5 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, and the latest update on his toe injury suggests the situation is more concerning than initially believed.

According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed Friday that Monangai has been ruled out after the injury proved more significant than the team originally anticipated.

Monangai recently visited a specialist and is currently wearing a walking boot. He will not participate in Friday's practice.

It's a disappointing development for a Bears offense that leaned heavily on Monangai during last Sunday's 23-12 victory over the New York Jets.

The second-year running back delivered the best performance of his young career, rushing for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. He has emerged as one of Chicago's most productive offensive players through four games, totaling 324 rushing yards and three touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

His absence creates an immediate challenge for Johnson, particularly with starting quarterback Caleb Williams still recovering from a hamstring injury.

D'Andre Swift figures to resume his lead-back status against Green Bay, assuming he's healthy enough to do so. Swift has been dealing with hip and knee injuries and was limited in Thursday's practice after sitting out Wednesday.

Roschon Johnson could also see additional opportunities in Chicago's backfield.

The bigger concern, however, is Monangai's recovery beyond Sunday.

The fact that he required a specialist evaluation and is now in a boot raises questions about how long he might be sidelined. No specific recovery timetable has been established.

For now, the Bears must prepare to face their biggest rival without a running back who was becoming an increasingly important part of their offensive identity.
