The Chicago Bears will be without Caleb Williams again in Week 5, but the latest update on their franchise quarterback doesn't suggest he'll be out for much longer.
Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed that Williams won't practice this week and will not play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers as he continues recovering from the right hamstring injury he suffered against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. Tyson Bagent will start at Lambeau Field.
The encouraging part is how Johnson described Williams' progress.
"He's doing a great job with his rehab," Johnson said this week. "He's not going to be there this week for us, but we think it's still a week-to-week deal for us."
Williams remains week-to-week, with no reported setbacks in his rehabilitation.
That makes Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons the next potential return date, although the Bears haven't established a firm timetable. And Chicago has earned the luxury of being patient.
The Bears are 2-0 since Williams went down, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-7 behind Case Keenum before defeating the New York Jets 23-12 with Bagent at quarterback. Chicago is now 3-1 entering Sunday's NFC North showdown at Green Bay.
There's little reason to accelerate Williams' recovery merely because the Packers are next. The bigger priority is getting him completely healthy for the meat of the Bears' schedule.
