Chicago Bears fans finally got their first extended look at Dillon Thieneman during Saturday's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Now they can go back and examine every snap.
A new video compilation features every snap Thieneman played against the Browns in Chicago's 34-10 preseason victory, offering a closer look at the Bears' 2026 first-round pick.
Thieneman played 14 defensive snaps in his preseason debut. According to the Pro Football Focus data from the game, he finished with a 52.4 overall defensive grade, ranking 24th among Chicago's 27 graded defenders.
Dillon Thieneman's Bears debut was about getting NFL reps
The Bears selected Thieneman with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft with the expectation that he'll become a major piece of Dennis Allen's secondary, and his preseason debut represented the first small step.
Thieneman didn't produce a splash play against Cleveland, and his limited workload makes it difficult to draw any sweeping conclusions. His 14 defensive snaps included six against the run and eight in coverage, according to the PFF.
The Bears also weren't asking Thieneman to prove in one afternoon that he's ready to become a star. This was an opportunity to experience NFL game speed, work through his assignments, and begin translating what he's learned throughout training camp into live action.
Rather than judging Thieneman solely by whether he intercepted a pass or delivered a highlight-reel hit, Bears fans should watch his positioning before the snap, how quickly he diagnoses plays, and how he moves within Allen's defense.
Bears have high expectations for Dillon Thieneman
Thieneman has already provided glimpses during training camp of why Chicago invested a first-round pick in him.
Ben Johnson recently praised the rookie's play speed while acknowledging that Thieneman's desire to get every detail right can occasionally slow him down as he processes his responsibilities. Johnson said getting more repetitions should allow the rookie to eventually "let loose and get after it."
The Bears' secondary has already been hit hard by injuries, most notably the loss of Coby Bryant following knee surgery. It's why Chicago needs Thieneman's development to accelerate.
Saturday's performance wasn't spectacular. His PFF grade certainly wasn't. But 14 snaps into an NFL career is no time for declarative statements. It's just the starting point for a player who could eventually become a foundational piece of the defense.
