Early indications suggest Chicago Bears left tackle Braxton Jones avoided a significant injury after exiting Thursday's practice during the offensive line versus defensive line one-on-one pass-rushing drills. While Jones still needs to undergo further evaluation, the initial outlook appears encouraging, according to the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.
Jones left the field with head athletic trainer Andre Tucker after getting banged up late in the drill period. He was visibly emotional as he walked toward the locker room, an understandable reaction given the timing. Jones has spent the week taking the first-team reps at left tackle while competing to secure the starting job, making any potential injury especially concerning.
The positive early outlook is welcome news for Chicago, which is still sorting through its left tackle competition.
Head coach Ben Johnson said earlier Thursday that the battle remains open despite Jones receiving the first-team reps throughout the week, adding that the Bears plan to continue rotating several players before making a final decision. If Jones is indeed able to avoid missing significant time, he'll remain the frontrunner to open the season protecting Caleb Williams' blind side.
