The Chicago Bears haven't played a snap in Week 8 yet, but the NFC North race has already gotten considerably more interesting.
With the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions both winning, Chicago enters Monday night's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks with an important opportunity to keep pace in the NFL's most competitive division.
And with the Minnesota Vikings suffering their first loss of the season, the Bears suddenly have a chance to move closer to first place.
NFC North standings entering Monday night
Team | Record | Division record |
|---|---|---|
Minnesota Vikings | 6-1 | 2-1 |
Detroit Lions | 5-2 | 2-0 |
Chicago Bears | 5-2 | 0-2 |
Green Bay Packers | 5-3 | 1-2 |
Lions and Packers keep the pressure on Chicago
Detroit delivered the division's biggest result Sunday, defeating Minnesota 19-15 and handing the Vikings their first loss.
The Lions have now won three straight games, improving to 5-2 and remaining undefeated against NFC North opponents.
Green Bay also took care of business, defeating Carolina 27-19 on Thursday Night Football to improve to 5-3.
That leaves Chicago in third place entering Monday night. The Bears have won two straight games, including their Week 7 win over New England, but their 0-2 division record remains a big problem.
Bears have a chance to make a statement
A victory over Seattle would move Chicago to 6-2 and just half a game behind Minnesota and ahead of Detroit in the standings.
A loss would leave Chicago at 5-3, tied with Green Bay in overall record but behind in the standings because of their head-to-head loss.
So, yeah, tonight's game is a big deal.
The Bears aren't just trying to extend their winning streak or showcase newly acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. They're trying to stay firmly in the NFC North race.
