The Chicago Bears have assembled one of the NFL's most intriguing collections of young pass catchers around Caleb Williams, and Rome Odunze sounds particularly impressed with what he's seeing from Colston Loveland.
Odunze offered some serious praise for the second-year tight end Tuesday, calling Loveland a rare talent.
"Rare, diamond," Odunze said. "It's impressive to see his route-running ability, and then you get him down there blocking. His versatility is incredible and super glad that he's on the crew and I learned a lot from him based on his routes and fluidity."
That's quite the endorsement coming from a wide receiver who knows a thing or two about running routes.
Colston Loveland's versatility continues to stand out
Loveland already established himself as one of Williams' most important weapons during an impressive rookie season.
The Bears' 2025 first-round pick caught 58 passes for 713 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season, then added 137 yards and two touchdowns in Chicago's two playoff games.
Loveland's value to the Bears' offense comes from how many different ways Chicago can use him. He can line up as an in-line tight end, move into the slot, or create favorable matchups elsewhere in the formation. His ability to contribute as a blocker makes that versatility even more valuable because his presence doesn't necessarily tip the Bears' intentions before the snap.
The most interesting part of his comments might be that Odunze says he's learning from Loveland's routes and fluidity.
Yep; That's a wide receiver praising a tight end's route-running technique.

Loveland could be headed for an even bigger second season
Loveland will be an even bigger matchup problem for opposing defenses in 2026.
Defenses only have so many answers when Johnson can move Loveland around the formation and force linebackers and defensive backs to declare how they're going to cover him. It's especially true when there are equally dangerous pass catchers like Luther Burden III and Odunze lining up around him.
Based on what the Bears saw from Loveland as a rookie, and what his teammates are seeing now, it's not out of the realm of possibility for him to challenge for the NFL's most productive tight end this year.
And, yes, that would certainly make him "rare."
