Caleb Williams challenges Rome Odunze to take the next step for Bears

Now, according to Williams, it's up to Odunze to make it happen.

Williams offered an interesting assessment of his third-year wide receiver Tuesday, praising Odunze's work ethic and potential while also making it clear that there's another level he expects the former first-round pick to reach.

"Ever since he's been here, I'm excited for him to take the next step, and the next step is up to him," Williams said. "Obviously, I'm going to push him and encourage him, but taking that next step is up to him."

Williams didn't leave much mystery about what that next step requires, either.

"Trying to be perfect, being friendly to the football, being friendly to the QB, and protecting your brother when the throw isn't perfect," Williams said. "I'm extremely excited for him."

There's an important distinction in those comments. Williams isn't questioning Odunze's talent or willingness to work. In fact, he offered an example that suggests the opposite.

"There have been moments where I had a bad practice or game and texted him, 'Yo, can we get to the indoor?' and he shows up and works," Williams said. "He needs to keep growing, keep progressing, and keep trying to be right for the QB."

Rome Odunze must take next step in 2026

Williams and Odunze have already produced some memorable moments together, including their pivotal fourth-down connection during Chicago's playoff comeback against the Green Bay Packers last season. Williams escaped pressure and found Odunze for 27 yards to keep the Bears' season alive, a play that showcased exactly what the quarterback-receiver combination can become when they're operating on the same wavelength.

Now the challenge is turning those flashes into consistent production.

Odunze has made no secret of how he views himself entering 2026. He said during training camp that he sees himself as a WR1 and wants the football on every play. Williams' comments don't contradict that confidence. If anything, he's challenging Odunze to prove it.

With D.J. Moore no longer in Chicago, Odunze and Luther Burden III enter the season as the Bears' top wide receiver options. Colston Loveland gives Williams another high-end target at tight end, but there should be plenty of opportunities for Odunze to establish himself as the alpha receiver he believes he can be.

But Williams' message on Tuesday wasn't simply praise. It sounded more like accountability between two players whose development will be closely connected.

Williams wants Odunze to become more precise. More quarterback-friendly. More dependable when everything doesn't go exactly as planned. And judging by the extra work Odunze has already been willing to put in with his quarterback, he's embracing that challenge.
