The Chicago Bears' search for answers at left tackle could eventually include Ozzy Trapilo, who isn't being ruled out as possibly making his return from injury during training camp.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles provided an encouraging update on Trapilo's recovery during an appearance on Hoge & Jahns, revealing that the team has discussed multiple potential timelines for his return, including one that could get him back on the practice field before training camp ends.

"Yeah, we've talked about the different scenarios, whether he comes back and has a little bit of training camp, if he comes back in September," Poles said.

The key for the Bears isn't necessarily getting Trapilo back as quickly as possible. It's getting him back early enough to participate in the kind of practices that will actually prepare him to compete in Week 1 or sometime soon thereafter.

"I think the big thing for us is padded practices," Poles said. "If you get too far down the line, it's really hard to get that physical practice that you need to prepare for games."

There are only so many useful evaluations the Bears can make during walkthroughs and practices without pads. Offensive line play requires contact. For Trapilo to realistically work his way back into the lineup, he must experience that physicality in order to test his knee.

"We've kind of looked at that on the calendar and want to map that out for him so he feels confident coming back," Poles said. "So, yeah, we kind of mapped that out, and hopefully he's able to capture some of those padded practices."

When asked whether that means a training camp return remains possible, Poles didn't shut the door.

"Potentially."

Braxton Jones has received extensive work with the first-team offensive line during training camp, while Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie have also been part of the competition. Ben Johnson has repeatedly stressed that the Bears aren't ready to declare a winner, saying recently that the team will continue cycling players through the position until it finds the right answer.

Trapilo could eventually complicate that decision.

The Bears entered the offseason expecting him to factor heavily into their plans before the knee injury he suffered in January changed the equation. His recovery forced Chicago to build additional insurance into the position, but it didn't necessarily remove Trapilo from the picture for the entire 2026 season.

There's obviously a substantial difference between being medically cleared to practice and being ready to start an NFL game. Even if Trapilo returns before camp ends, he'll have to rebuild strength, conditioning and confidence while catching up on the physical reps he's missed throughout the summer.

If Trapilo can't return until September, his path back into the lineup becomes considerably more complicated. Once the regular season begins, practices become more about installing a game plan and preparing for an opponent than providing extended developmental work for an offensive lineman returning from a significant injury.

But if Trapilo can get back on the field before camp breaks?

If Trapilo can catch even a handful of those valuable padded practices Poles referenced, the Bears' left tackle competition could get a lot more interesting before Week 1.
