Darnell Wright's $116 million Bears contract is even more impressive once you see the details

Now we have a much better idea of how Wright can actually collect it.

According to Spotrac, Wright received $42.18 million fully guaranteed at signing. The rest of the guarantees in the deal are scheduled to vest over the next several years, creating a straightforward path for Wright to collect approximately $93 million if he remains on Chicago's roster.

The $42.18 million guaranteed at signing breaks down like this:

• $19.072 million signing bonus

• $2.464 million 2026 roster bonus

• $1.145 million 2026 base salary

• $1.5 million 2027 base salary

• $18 million 2027 option bonus

According to Spotrac, Wright's $22.5 million base salary for 2028 becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2027 league year. Another $22.5 million base salary for 2029 becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2028 league year.

Finally, $5.819 million of Wright's 2030 base salary becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2030 league year.

Add it all together, and you get the approximately $93 million in guarantees that were reported when Wright's extension was announced.

There's a big difference between money guaranteed at signing and injury guarantees or future guarantees that vest at predetermined dates. Wright doesn't have $93 million sitting in his bank account today. But the Bears also didn't structure this contract with a maze of unrealistic incentives standing between Wright and his cash.

If he continues playing at the level that earned him the extension, Chicago will have every reason to keep him around as those guarantees vest.

Wright is coming off the best season of his career and has developed into one of the foundational pieces of Chicago's offense. The former No. 10 overall pick has become exactly what Ryan Poles envisioned when he made Wright his first first-round selection as Bears general manager.

The four-year extension averages $29 million per season, a massive investment in a player the Bears believe can anchor the right side of their offensive line throughout his prime.

It also represents another important development for Poles' roster-building plan. Drafting premium players is only half the battle. Eventually, successful organizations have to identify which homegrown players deserve second contracts and pay them before they reach the open market.

Wright became the first Poles first-round pick to reach that stage.

The Bears aren't just betting that Wright's breakout was real. The structure of this contract shows they're betting he'll remain one of the NFL's premier right tackles for years to come.

And if they're right, Wright should have a very clear path toward collecting every bit of that $93 million.
