Two notable defensive players changed teams in a pair of trades across the NFL on the eve of 2026 free agency.

The New York Jets acquired five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. In a separate deal, the Dallas Cowboys traded for Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers for a 2027 fourth-round selection.

Jets Add Proven Playmaker in Minkah Fitzpatrick

The Jets’ move for Fitzpatrick adds one of the most accomplished defensive backs of the past decade to their secondary.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Fitzpatrick quickly established himself as one of the league’s most versatile defensive backs. He has earned multiple Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro recognition during his career.

Fitzpatrick has been known for his ability to impact games in multiple ways, including creating turnovers and making plays around the line of scrimmage. During the 2025 season, Fitzpatrick totaled 82 tackles and 1 sack across 14 games for Miami.

For the Jets, the addition of Fitzpatrick provides a veteran presence and a playmaking safety who can anchor the defense.

Cowboys Boost Pass Rush with Rashan Gary

The Cowboys addressed their defensive front by acquiring Gary from the Packers.

Gary was selected 12th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft and developed into one of Green Bay’s most disruptive pass rushers. He finished the 2025 season with 7.5 sacks and has 46.5 sacks during his career.

The move gives Dallas a proven pass rusher on its defensive front after shipping Micah Parsons to the Packers last season.

In return, the Packers receive a 2027 fourth-round pick, adding draft capital while moving a veteran defender.

Jets, Cowboys Trades Are All About Defense

Both trades reflect a common theme as teams prepare for the upcoming season: strengthening defenses with experienced talent.

The Jets add a veteran leader in the secondary, while the Cowboys reinforce their pass rush with a proven edge defender. Meanwhile, the Dolphins and Packers gain future draft picks as they reshape their rosters.

As the offseason continues, deals like these could set the stage for additional movement across the league as teams position themselves for the season ahead.
