The Cleveland Browns are actively exploring outside quarterback options as they prepare for the 2026 offseason.

According to a report from Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns have Malik Willis and Ty Simpson “on their radar” as they evaluate potential additions to their quarterback room.

Cleveland has made it clear that it will examine every possible avenue at the position. The Browns do not appear content to stand pat, and they are casting a wide net that includes free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft.

Willis presents the most intriguing upside of the two names mentioned.

Originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Willis entered the league with a reputation for elite arm strength and dynamic mobility. While he did not immediately seize a starting job early in his career, teams continue to view him as a developmental passer with athletic traits that translate in today’s NFL.

In 2025, Malik Willis made the most of limited opportunities with the Packers and delivered elite efficiency. He completed 30 of 35 passes (85.7%) for 422 yards, averaged 12.1 yards per attempt, and threw three touchdowns without an interception, posting a 145.5 passer rating. While the sample size was small, Willis showcased sharp decision-making and explosive efficiency when called upon, traits that will draw attention from quarterback-needy teams entering 2026 free agency.

Cleveland’s reported interest signals a willingness to bet on upside rather than strictly experience. Willis offers dual-threat ability, off-platform playmaking, and the arm talent to stretch the field vertically. In the right offensive structure, those traits can stress defenses and expand the playbook.

The Browns’ quarterback situation has remained fluid. Injuries and inconsistency have forced the organization to reassess its long-term plan under center, even with Shedeur Sanders on the roster. By placing Willis on its radar, Cleveland is acknowledging that it needs competition and potentially a different skill set to lead the offense.

Financially, Willis would require a significant commitment, as projections place his market value around $35.5 million per season. That price tag would force the Browns to weigh whether they view him as a legitimate starter rather than just competition, especially given the cap implications of adding another high-salary quarterback.

Cabot’s report makes it clear that the Browns are still in the evaluation phase, but the inclusion of Willis’ name shows that Cleveland wants mobility and arm talent in its next quarterback move.

Free agency always produces unexpected movement at quarterback. By identifying Malik Willis early in the process, the Browns position themselves to act quickly if the market develops in their favor.
