Caleb Williams is too big to fail in Chicago. He is all things present and future for the Bears, especially for GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus. And that's partly why everyone is bamboozled over how poorly Eberflus has handled his development, even going as far as not committing to Williams for the rest of the season during a press conference this week.
Eberflus essentially said the Bears will review the offense on a weekly basis, including Williams, who, if he continues in his rookie slump, could be benched by a desperate head coach trying to save his job.
Former NFL coach Jon Gruden, who's now part of the Barstool Sports team, offered a different (and wiser) approach the Bears should be taking with Caleb Williams. It involves unconditional support, starting with the veterans in the locker room and extending up the building into the front office.
In other words, Gruden is preaching common sense:
Gruden questioned whether the Bears have the necessary leaders to rally around Williams, and his point is valid. Keenan Allen and DJ Moore both think they're the No.1 receiver. D'Andre Swift has only been a Bear for a few months, and a defensive leader like Jaquan Brisker is on injured reserve. The list goes on and on.
But here's the bigger point: It's incredibly frustrating that a coach watching from the media sideline has better solutions than the one on the Chicago Bears' payroll. Hopefully, Eberflus is a fan of Gruden's new media gig and is paying attention to his words. Otherwsie, he may very well be replaced by him in 2025.
