The Chicago Bears are signing former New England Patriots defensive lineman Sam Roberts to their practice squad, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

According to Schefter, the intention is to sign Roberts to the practice squad and call him up to the active roster for Week 1. This is likely due to Zacch Picken's nagging injury. If Pickens cannot go against the Tennessee Titans, Roberts will fill his roster spot.

Roberts, a sixth-round pick in 2022, has had a limited impact so far in two seasons with New England. He's played in 12 games, started one, and has racked up just seven total tackles. His PFF grades have remained in the 40s.

Bears fans shouldn't expect a major playmaker in Roberts, but he can provide reliable depth. Right now, the Bears need as much defensive line depth as they can get their hands on. I would expect at least one more move at that position group between now and the season opener.
