Chicago Bears legendary running back Walter Payton would have turned 71 years old on Thursday. Payton passed away in 1999 at 46 after a brief battle with a rare liver condition. The Bears celebrated his life via social media with a special birthday tweet.
A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Payton was a prolific rusher that was named league MVP in 1977. Nearly a decade leader, he helped the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears win Super Bowl XX. Payton once held NFL records for career rushing yards, touchdowns, carries, yards from scrimmage, and all-purpose yards, among other statistical categories. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
