Chicago Bears Linked to Unexpected Draft Need Ahead of 2026 NFL Draft

The Chicago Bears may target an unexpected position in the 2026 NFL Draft as long-term roster questions emerge.

The Chicago Bears’ pre-draft focus in the secondary has centered on one position: safety.

With Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker no longer in the picture, and only Coby Bryant added in free agency, there is still a clear opening in the starting lineup.

But Bleacher Report introduced a different angle on the Bears’ biggest secondary concern, and it is worth examining.

Cornerback.

Why Cornerback Is Even Being Discussed as a Bears' Need

On the surface, ranking cornerback as a Bears' team need feels unnecessary.

Chicago already has a strong trio in Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, and Kyler Gordon.

Johnson is an established No. 1 option. Stevenson has emerged as a steady presence on the boundary. Gordon continues to be one of the more effective nickel defenders in the league.

That group does not look like a weakness.

But roster construction is not only about the current depth chart. It is about what that group will look like two years from now.

The Real Question at Cornerback for the Bears Is 2027, Not 2026

This is where Bleacher Report’s argument starts to carry weight.

Tyrique Stevenson is set to hit free agency after the 2026 season, which puts pressure on Ryan Poles to have a plan in place.

The most reliable way to secure a starting-caliber corner on a cost-controlled deal is through the NFL draft.

Well-run teams do not wait for a position to become a problem. They anticipate it and act early. If the Bears want to operate at that level, selecting a cornerback early in the 2026 draft is a decision they need to make now.

Otherwise, they risk finding themselves in a familiar position, entering an offseason with significant uncertainty in the secondary, just like they are dealing with now at safety.

Why Cornerback Still Feels Like a Luxury Pick for the Bears

Even with the long-term outlook in mind, cornerback is not near the top of Chicago’s priority list.

The Bears still have more immediate needs:

  • Edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat
  • Interior defensive line disruption
  • Offensive tackle

Those positions will have a more direct impact on winning games in 2026, especially if addressed early in the draft.

And the reality is simple. The NFL is a results-driven league. The Bears have not built enough equity to prioritize future planning over present production.

Cornerback depth has value, but it does not carry the same level of urgency right now.

The Bears' Bottom Line

Cornerback is not a position the Bears need to solve in 2026, but it is not something they can ignore beyond this season.

That is the line between reacting to problems and staying ahead of them.

If Chicago has any uncertainty about Tyrique Stevenson’s long-term future, identifying his successor now would make sense. The key is using the right draft capital to do it.

Spending a premium pick at cornerback would invite scrutiny, especially with more immediate needs still on the board.

If they miss, it costs them a chance to add an instant-impact player. If they get it right, it reinforces the approach Ryan Poles has taken since he arrived in Chicago.
