Ryan Poles Opens Up About Caleb Williams’ Next Contract With Bears

Ryan Poles discussed Caleb Williams’ development and how it could shape a future contract decision for the Bears.

There’s a point every franchise reaches with a young quarterback where belief turns into planning. The Chicago Bears aren’t there yet with Caleb Williams.

But they’re getting close.

Speaking with the Chicago Sun-Times at the NFL owners meetings, general manager Ryan Poles laid out where Williams stands entering his third season and how that ties directly to the biggest decision still ahead.

Poles described Williams’ development in simple terms.

“It’s good to almost feel like you’ve got it,” Poles said via the Chicago Sun-Times. “If you go with a traffic light, it went red as a rookie to yellow. You can creep forward a little bit and start having some of these conversations to anticipate it. But we need him to give us a green light.”

That green light is everything.

It determines whether the Bears move from being excited about the growth Caleb Williams showed in 2025 to being convinced he's among the top starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Consistency Is the Final Step for Caleb Williams

Poles didn't point to arm talent or athleticism as missing elements in Williams' game. Instead, he pointed to consistency. And consistency will be a big factor in determining when the next contract comes.

“Consistency is what I’m looking for,” he said.

That aligns with where Williams is in his development. The flashes have been there. The late-game playmaking has been there. What the Chicago Bears need now is a full season where those moments become the norm.

It's what separates a promising quarterback from a franchise one.

Williams finished the 2025 season completing 58.1% of his passes for a team-record 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Even without a final answer, the Bears are preparing for what comes next with a blockbuster Williams deal.

Williams signed a four-year, $39.5 million rookie deal in 2024, which includes a fifth-year team option. NFL rules allow the Bears to negotiate an extension after his third season, which means the window opens in 2027.

Poles acknowledged that planning has already begun.

“It’s really a summer project,” he said. “Matt Feinstein is digging into it now. We’ve had some preliminary conversations because we want to take some of these things into consideration as we build the team.”

That's how smart teams operate when they believe they might have their quarterback.

They plan before they know for sure.

Why Williams' Next Contract Could Be Different

If Williams takes the next step in his development, the Bears will face a familiar challenge. It's one that faces all teams once they exit the rookie quarterback contract window.

Pay the QB while fielding a Super Bowl-contending roster around him.

Recent deals for former No. 1 picks set the baseline. Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence each signed five-year contracts worth $275 million after their third seasons.

Williams could be in line for a similar deal.

But there is one detail that will complicate things. He doesn't have an agent.

“I’m sure it’ll present challenges,” Poles said. “We haven’t gotten that far. But if and when we get to that point, we’ll embrace that challenge.”

That adds another layer to what is already one of the most complex negotiations in sports.

The Stakes Go Beyond Caleb Williams for the Bears

Poles made it clear this is bigger than one contract.

“Not just Bears history, football history,” he said. “There’s been some unbelievable teams that can’t get the quarterback right, and it doesn’t lead to much.”

It's a harsh reality of the chase for a franchise quarterback.

Teams that get the quarterback right compete for championships. Teams that don't stay stuck in neutral.

“We’re making progress,” Poles said. “That is exciting to even be thinking about planning for that. It’s exciting. But then there’s a challenge after that, too.”

The Bears' Bottom Line

The Bears aren't ready to hand out a massive extension to Caleb Williams just yet.

But they're preparing for that almost certain reality.

Williams’ third season will determine everything. If he delivers the consistency Poles is looking for, the conversation shifts quickly from potential to a massive commitment.

And from there, the real work begins.
