Bears Plan to Get Luther Burden the Ball as Much as Possible in 2026

The Bears are prioritizing Luther Burden’s role in 2026, emphasizing his ability to create big plays after the catch.

The Chicago Bears didn’t draft Luther Burden III in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft to just be part of a wide receiver rotation.

They drafted him to be one of the team's most dynamic playmakers.

Based on what the Bears' coach Ben Johnson said at the NFL owners meetings, they are already putting that plan into action.

The Bears are not treating Burden's 2026 role as a slow build. It sounds like a priority.

“He is a dynamic playmaker,” head coach Ben Johnson said. “He’s got some of the best run after catch in the game right now. We need to continue to get the ball in his hands as often as we possibly can.”

That’s about as direct as Ben Johnson can lay out Luther Burden III’s role.

Despite getting off to a slow start as a rookie, Burden ended the 2025 season with 47 catches for 652 yards and two touchdowns.

And, as Johnson noted, he flashed some wild after-the-catch skills.

Why Burden's Skill Set Changes the Offense

Burden’s value starts after the catch.

He is not just a receiver who wins at the point of reception. He is a player who can turn short throws into explosive plays. That matters in an offense built around timing, spacing, and putting stress on defenses horizontally and vertically.

For Caleb Williams, that kind of weapon simplifies reads and creates easy completions that can still flip the field.

Now that DJ Moore is a Buffalo Bill, Bears fans can expect many of those quick throws to go Burden's way. That's when the fireworks will begin.

The message from Ben Johnson points to one thing: More opportunities for Burden to make plays.

The Bears are not talking about Burden as a situational player. They are talking about him as someone who needs touches. And they can come in a variety of ways:

  • Designed screens
  • Quick-game concepts
  • Motion-based looks
  • Downfield throws

The common thread is involvement. And lots of it.

If the Bears follow through on that approach, Burden's impact will be more than just highlight plays. It will show up in consistent production. In fact, there's a reality that exists in which Burden finishes the 2026 NFL season as one of the best all-around receivers in the NFL.

There is a world that exists in which Burden can be the Bears' Justin Jefferson.

How Burden Fits in the Bigger Picture for the Bears

Chicago built its offense around young playmakers.

Burden joins a group that already includes Rome Odunze, Colston Loveland, and, of course, Caleb Williams.

Unlike Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland, who win with size and mismatches, Luther Burden III flips the field. He can run past a defensive back for a 70-yard touchdown or slice through traffic for, yep, another 70-yard score.

The Chicago Bears have built a pass-catching trio that can threaten defenses in every way. And with Johnson calling plays, the offense's upside is unlimited.

The Bears' Bottom Line

It sure sounds like the Chicago Bears are building a large part of the 2026 offense around Luther Burden.

When a coaching staff talks about getting a player the ball as often as possible, it usually translates into a breakout season.

If that carries over into 2026, Burden will not just be part of the offense. He will be one of the main reasons why it works.
