Bears QB Sends Strong Message About OC Press Taylor

Press Taylor is already making an impression inside Halas Hall, and one Chicago Bears quarterback explained why.

Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent didn’t hold back when asked about new offensive coordinator Press Taylor, offering one of the more revealing player perspectives we’ve heard this offseason.

“He is an extreme student of the game and is one of the smoothest dudes walking around the building every day,” Bagent said, via CHGO Bears. “The definition of cool, calm, and collected because he's been through it.”

That last part matters more than it might seem.

Taylor isn’t stepping into the Bears' OC role without context.

He’s been an NFL coordinator before, and that experience—good and bad—is something players clearly recognize.

Bagent pointed directly to that background as a reason for the confidence he sees day to day.

“He was a coordinator, and he got fired, but I’m telling you, guys like Press Taylor don’t come around every day,” Bagent said.

Taylor won't be a traditional offensive coordinator in Chicago. Remember: this is Ben Johnson's offense, and it's Johnson who calls the plays.

But what he will provide is another organized, data-obsessed point of view that will help Johnson form his master offensive plan from week to week.

The “Database” That Press Taylor Built

The most interesting part of Bagent’s comments wasn’t about Taylor's personality. It was about his preparation.

“This dude’s got a freaking nerd database with a million different plays versus a million different defenses,” Bagent said.

That lines up with what Johnson has looked for in his offensive coordinator. It's why Declan Doyle was his first choice in 2025, and why Taylor is that guy this year.

For a quarterback room led by Caleb Williams, that kind of detail will make a difference over the course of a season.

The Bears aren’t asking Taylor to build something from scratch. They’re asking him to elevate what’s already in place.

Chicago’s offense showed real growth in 2025, particularly in how it handled pressure and situational football. The next step is consistency; being able to adjust week to week and sustain production over a full season.

That’s where Taylor’s approach could show up.

It remains to be seen whether Taylor and Johnson will be as in sync as Johnson was with Doyle. But the fact Johnson decided to promote Taylor from within rather than go outside Halas Hall for his OC says quite a bit.

Bagent’s endorsement isn’t just about liking a coach. He's seen Taylor up close during meetings, film breakdowns, and on the practice field.

When a quarterback talks about preparation and command the way Bagent did, it usually reflects what’s happening behind the scenes.

“He is hilarious, and he’s a really good dude and he works really hard,” Bagent added. “I knew that that was going to happen, I was just curious to see how long it was going to take to promote my guy.”

The Bears' Bottom Line

The Bears don’t need their offense reinvented in 2026. They just need to build on what was already a wildly successful first year under Johnson.

If Bagent’s comments are any indication, Taylor could end up being an upgrade over Doyle.

And for a Chicago Bears team looking to take the next step in 2026, that might be exactly what they need.
