Chicago Bears Nearly Out of Salary Cap Space After Free Agency Spending

The Chicago Bears now have just about $1.4 million in salary cap space remaining after their early free-agency moves, according to updated data from Over The Cap.

The Chicago Bears didn’t sit quietly during the first waves of 2026 NFL free agency. Now the numbers show just how aggressive they were.

According to updated data from Over The Cap, the Bears currently have about $1.43 million in available salary cap space, placing them near the very bottom of the league in financial flexibility.

Only a few teams are tighter against the cap right now. The Buffalo Bills are actually over the cap, while teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Miami Dolphins are also operating with less than $10 million available.

For Chicago, the updated cap picture helps explain why the team has been deliberate with the rest of its offseason decisions.

The Bears entered the offseason looking to defend their NFC North title, and general manager Ryan Poles clearly chose to invest in that goal.

Chicago added several new defensive pieces, including linebacker Devin Bush, safety Coby Bryant, and defensive tackle Neville Gallimore.

They also addressed special teams by signing All-Pro return specialist Kalif Raymond and took a calculated gamble on former first-round offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. to compete along the offensive line.

None of those moves individually blew up the salary cap. But together, they’ve pushed Chicago right up against it.

The Bears currently have roughly $288.1 million already committed to cap spending and about $19.3 million in dead money on the books.

That’s the financial reality of building a roster designed to compete now.

Why the Bears' Cap Situation Isn’t Panic-Worthy

Seeing the Bears near the bottom of the league in cap space might sound alarming at first glance. But it’s actually a pretty normal place for a contending team to be.

Clubs that are pushing to win, especially those that just won their division, typically use their cap space aggressively to reinforce their roster.

Chicago appears to have done exactly that.

The Bears also have options if they need breathing room. Contract restructures, or extensions, could create additional space later in the offseason if a targeted opportunity arises.

What This Means for the Rest of the Chicago Bears' Offseason

With just over $1 million in available cap space, the Bears are unlikely to make another splashy move in free agency.

That financial reality also lines up with recent comments from league insiders suggesting Chicago may not have the room to pursue a blockbuster move for players like Maxx Crosby.

Instead, the focus will likely shift toward the 2026 NFL Draft, where the Bears still hold multiple early selections.

The Bears spent the early part of free agency adding new pieces to the defense. Now the checkbook has mostly closed.

And the next big roster upgrades in Chicago will almost certainly come from the 2026 draft board.
