Coby Bryant Signing Earns High Grade as Chicago Bears Reshape Defense
The Chicago Bears are receiving strong early reviews for signing safety Coby Bryant, with analysts praising his versatility and physicality.
The Chicago Bears are continuing to earn strong reviews around the league for one of their most important defensive additions of the 2026 offseason.
After Chicago agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks defensive back Coby Bryant on a three-year, $40 million deal, CBS Sports evaluated the move as one of the better defensive signings of free agency. The Bears earned an A- grade, citing Bryant’s versatility and physical playing style as a strong fit for Chicago’s evolving defense.
The review focused heavily on how Bryant’s skill set aligns with what the Bears want to build on the defensive side of the ball heading into the 2026 season.
Why Coby Bryant Fits the Chicago Bears’ Defense
Chicago’s defensive success in 2025 was driven largely by its ability to generate takeaways. But relying heavily on turnovers can be unpredictable from year to year, which made adding a versatile defensive back a priority this offseason.

Bryant checks several of those boxes.
"A former slot cornerback who thrived when moved to safety, Bryant is aggressive attacking things in front of him, able to cover deep and active all over the place," CBS Sports’ Zachary Pereles wrote. "He adds some major physicality, too."
That physical presence could become especially important in Chicago’s secondary. If the Bears move on from safety Jaquan Brisker in free agency, Bryant projects as a potential tone-setter on the back end of the defense.
Bryant’s Production Supports the Strong Grade
Bryant’s recent production in Seattle helps explain why the Bears made him a priority in free agency.
During the 2024 season, Bryant recorded 73 tackles, three interceptions, six pass breakups, and a defensive touchdown while emerging as a starting safety. He followed that performance with another productive campaign in 2025, finishing with four interceptions and 41 tackles.
Those numbers reflect the type of playmaking ability Chicago has emphasized while reshaping its defense.
Bryant’s ball skills could also help offset the potential loss of veteran safety Kevin Byard III, who has been one of the Bears’ top takeaway producers.
A Key Piece of Chicago’s Defensive Overhaul
Bryant’s arrival is part of a broader defensive overhaul underway in Chicago.
Along with Bryant, the Bears have added linebacker Devin Bush and defensive tackle Neville Gallimore as they attempt to inject more speed and physicality into the unit.
Bryant, however, could prove to be one of the most impactful additions of the group. His ability to play sideline-to-sideline, support the run near the line of scrimmage, and generate turnovers makes him a strong candidate to become an instant fan-favorite.
If the CBS Sports evaluation proves accurate, the Bears may have landed one of the most valuable defensive upgrades of the 2026 free-agency cycle.
