Should the Chicago Bears Trade for Trent Williams? 49ers Open to Deal
NFL Network reports the 49ers could trade Trent Williams. Would a blockbuster move make sense for the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams?
The Chicago Bears have been aggressive in reshaping their roster this offseason, but a new report raises the possibility of an even bigger move.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers are open to trading star left tackle Trent Williams if their contract situation remains unresolved.
“The 49ers are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams if the situation doesn’t get resolved,” Rapoport reported. “A resolution has not been easy, and Williams is frustrated with the process. He’s due $32M in salary with a $38M+ cap number.”
That report immediately raises a logical question for Chicago: Should the Bears explore a blockbuster trade for one of the best offensive linemen of the modern era?
Trent Williams Would Instantly Transform the Bears’ Offensive Line
Even late in his career, Williams remains one of the most dominant offensive tackles in football.
The longtime Pro Bowl left tackle has earned 11 Pro Bowl selections and multiple first-team All-Pro honors, including dominant seasons with San Francisco, where he routinely graded among the NFL’s top offensive linemen. His combination of athleticism and power has made him a cornerstone of the 49ers’ offense since arriving via trade in 2020.

If the Bears acquired Williams, they would immediately plug in an elite blindside protector for franchise quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Financial Reality Makes a Trent Williams Trade Complicated
While the football fit is obvious, the financial side is more complicated.
Rapoport’s report notes that Williams is due $32 million in salary with a cap number exceeding $38 million, making him one of the most expensive offensive linemen in the league.
Chicago has created flexibility this offseason with moves like the DJ Moore trade and the release of Tremaine Edmunds, but committing that level of money to a veteran offensive lineman would still represent a massive financial commitment.
Age is another factor. Williams will be 38 next season, meaning the Bears would be paying premium money for a player whose level of production could fall off a cliff without notice.
Draft Capital Could Also Be an Obstacle to a Bears trade for Trent Williams
The Bears have tried to preserve draft capital during their roster rebuild under general manager Ryan Poles.
Trading for Trent Williams would almost certainly require meaningful compensation. When San Francisco acquired him in 2020, they surrendered a third-round and fifth-round pick to Washington.
Given Williams’ reputation and continued high-level play, the price today could be similar or higher.
Should the Bears Make the Call?
From a pure football standpoint, the answer is simple: adding Trent Williams would dramatically upgrade the Bears’ offensive line.
However, the combination of salary, trade compensation, and long-term roster planning could make the move difficult to justify.
Chicago’s offseason strategy has focused on balancing the roster while protecting its future flexibility. While a Trent Williams trade would generate major headlines, it may not align with that broader plan.
Still, if the 49ers seriously begin taking calls, the Bears would be wise to at least explore the possibility. After all, opportunities to acquire a Hall-of-Fame-caliber left tackle rarely come around.
