Chicago Bears Unlikely to Pursue Splashy Edge Rusher in Free Agency
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler says the Chicago Bears may prioritize interior pass rush help rather than a splashy edge rusher in 2026 free agency.
The Chicago Bears have been connected to several high-profile pass rushers this offseason, but one NFL insider believes a major edge signing may not be part of the team’s plan.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Chicago is not expected to aggressively pursue a splashy edge rusher when free agency begins. Fowler suggested the Bears could instead prioritize other areas of their defensive front.
“Yes, they could use pass-rush help,” Fowler wrote. “But I don't sense Chicago is desperate for a splashy pass rusher. Much will depend on price. Interior rush help could be the way to go.”
It's insight that offers a clearer picture of how Chicago may approach the upcoming free agency period.
Why the Bears Might Prioritize Interior Pressure in Free Agency
While the Chicago Bears have been linked to several prominent pass rushers this offseason, Fowler’s report suggests the team could focus on improving pressure from the interior defensive line.
Chicago’s defense already features a proven edge rusher in Montez Sweat, who led the team with 10 sacks during the 2025 season. Adding interior disruption alongside him could make the entire defensive front more effective, despite the overwhelming feeling that Sweat needs a competent running mate.
Defensive tackle Gervon Dexter totaled a career-high six sacks last year, but he's entering the final year of his contract. It remains to be seen whether the Bears will view him as a player worthy of a massive second contract.
Bears' Free Agency Strategy May Depend on Price of Edge Rushers
Fowler also emphasized that Chicago’s approach could ultimately come down to cost.
The Bears recently created additional salary cap flexibility through several roster moves, including trading wide receiver DJ Moore and releasing linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Even with that extra space, Chicago appears unlikely to overspend for a marquee edge defender.
Instead, the team may focus on value signings that strengthen multiple areas of the defense rather than committing major resources to a single pass rusher.
They've already been connected to veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, who fits that description.
What It All Means for the Bears’ Defensive Plans
The Chicago Bears' offseason strategy appears to be centered on building a deeper and more balanced defensive front.
If Fowler’s reporting proves accurate, the Bears could target interior defensive linemen in free agency while continuing to develop their edge rotation behind Montez Sweat. Perhaps they have bigger plans for Austin Booker than most fans realize.
There's also the 2026 NFL Draft. Chicago could view their first-round pick, No. 25 overall, as the most effective way to add pass-rush help.
As free agency approaches, the Bears’ decisions along the defensive line will be one of the most important storylines to follow.
