Chicago Bears Eye Alex Anzalone as Tremaine Edmunds Replacement in Free Agency
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler says Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone is a free-agent name to watch for the Chicago Bears after Tremaine Edmunds’ release.
The Chicago Bears may already have a potential replacement in mind after moving on from linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Detroit Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone is a free-agent name to watch for Chicago as the team reshapes its defense.
In ESPN’s latest free agency notes, Fowler pointed to Anzalone as a logical fit for the Bears following Chicago's recent roster moves that freed up cap space.
“The Chicago Bears freed up around $17 million in cap space with the D.J. Moore trade, which they will need in free agency to aid the defense,” Fowler wrote. “To replace Tremaine Edmunds, Alex Anzalone is a name to watch.”
Fowler also noted the potential connection between Anzalone and the Bears’ coaching staff.
Why Alex Anzalone Could Fit the Bears’ Defense
Chicago’s defensive overhaul began when the team released Tremaine Edmunds earlier this offseason. The move created both a leadership vacancy and an immediate need at linebacker.
Anzalone offers the type of experience the Bears may value as they rebuild the middle of their defense. Since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2017, he has appeared in more than 100 games and developed into a consistent starter.

During his time with the Detroit Lions, Anzalone became one of the defense’s most reliable veterans. He totaled 95 tackles, four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and nine pass breakups in 2025, demonstrating his ability to contribute against both the run and the pass.
Anzalone's Connection to Chicago Bears Coaches Could Matter
Another factor that makes Alex Anzalone a name to monitor is his familiarity with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.
Allen previously coached Anzalone during their time together with the New Orleans Saints. That familiarity could make the transition smoother if Chicago chooses to pursue him once free agency begins.
Coaching relationships often play a significant role in free agency decisions, and there are obvious dots to connect with Allen and head coach Ben Johnson, who was with the Detroit Lions for most of Anzalone's tenure there.
Bears’ Free Agency Plan Taking Shape
Fowler’s report also offered additional insight into how Chicago may approach free agency.
Rather than aggressively chasing a high-priced edge rusher, the Bears could prioritize value additions on defense while maintaining financial flexibility.
Chicago is also expected to attempt to re-sign veteran safety Kevin Byard while allowing Jaquan Brisker to test the open market.
With several defensive positions in flux, adding a steady veteran linebacker like Anzalone could help stabilize the unit as the Bears continue reshaping the roster.
What Comes Next for the Chicago Bears
The Bears have created financial flexibility through recent roster moves, including the DJ Moore trade and the release of Edmunds.
That flexibility could allow Chicago to target defensive reinforcements when the 2026 free agency period begins. If Fowler’s reporting proves accurate, Alex Anzalone may quickly emerge as one of the Bears’ most logical targets to help fill the leadership and production void at linebacker.
