The Chicago Bears address a major need at safety in the latest 2026 NFL Mock Draft. In Sports Illustrated's post-Combine mock, Chicago selects Dillon Thieneman at No. 25 overall after a breakout performance at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Why Dillon Thieneman’s NFL Combine Performance Elevated His Stock

Dillon Thieneman solidified his first-round projection in Indianapolis. At 201 pounds, the Oregon safety ran a blazing 4.35 in the 40-yard dash and posted a 41-inch vertical jump, showcasing rare explosiveness for a defensive back with his frame.

That combination of size and speed allows him to play single-high, rotate into split-safety looks, and close downhill in run support. Range, recovery speed, and closing burst are non-negotiables in today’s NFL.

Why Safety Is a Real NFL Draft Need for the Chicago Bears

The Bears may be staring at a major turnover at the position.

Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker are both on expiring contracts entering the 2026 offseason. Combined, they accounted for more than 2,000 defensive snaps in 2025.

Replacing that volume and leadership won’t be simple.

Drafting Thieneman would give Chicago a high-upside athlete capable of playing deep, rotating into the slot, or supporting in the run game, all on a rookie contract.

Does Thieneman Make Sense for Bears at No. 25 Overall?

The Bears have been connected to edge rushers and defensive linemen throughout mock draft season. But safety is quietly one of the more pressing long-term needs on the roster.

Thieneman’s athletic profile and on-field production offer immediate starting value. He totaled eight interceptions and 306 tackles during his collegiate career. Ryan Poles said he wants Chicago's defense to get faster, and Thieneman fits that profile perfectly.

The bigger takeaway from this mock draft isn’t just the player, it’s the position. If the Chicago Bears enter the draft without securing a starting tandem at safety, a first-round pick on the position becomes very possible.

Post-Combine momentum often reshapes draft boards. Sports Illustrated believes Dillon Thieneman belongs in Round 1, and at No. 25, the Bears may agree.
