Quarterback Fernando Mendoza didn’t need to declare his preferred destination at the 2026 NFL Combine. His comments did enough on their own.

Speaking with reporters in Indianapolis, Mendoza said he felt “lucky” to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders and added that the opportunity to learn from Tom Brady “would mean so much.”

In a draft cycle where Las Vegas has long been connected to Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, the remarks felt less like generic gratitude and more like alignment.

"I was lucky enough to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders," Mendoza said Friday. "It was a fantastic interview. Coaching staff was in there. We went over some of my previous plays and did plays on the board. I thought it was a great meeting.

"I know they have the No. 1 pick, but anything can happen in the draft. Excited for the opportunity and whatever team drafts me, I am going to give everything I got to them."

Fernando Mendoza and the Raiders Appear Locked In Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft

The intrigue around the first overall pick ended as soon as Mendoza officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft. Las Vegas is positioned to secure a franchise quarterback, and Mendoza’s profile — polished, composed, accurate — fits what the organization has prioritized during its reset.

His comments at the Combine only reinforced that connection.

Mendoza didn’t overstate anything. He didn’t campaign. But highlighting the Raiders interview, and specifically the value of Brady’s mentorship, signaled awareness of the developmental ecosystem waiting in Las Vegas.

In a sport where quarterback fit matters as much as talent, that matters.

Tom Brady’s Presence Adds Weight to the Fit

Brady’s minority ownership stake has added a unique layer to the Raiders’ quarterback search. While he isn’t making draft picks, his voice and experience carry credibility inside the building.

For Mendoza to openly discuss the value of learning from Brady wasn’t accidental. It framed Las Vegas not just as a landing spot, but as a place where he can make the most out of his ability.

"Yeah, I mean, who hasn't admired Tom Brady? I mean, more Super Bowl rings than anybody ... anybody!" Mendoza said. "So, that opportunity would be fantastic. Tom Brady, I believe, is the greatest quarterback of all time -- by a wide margin -- and to be able to have the opportunity to be mentored by him, would … mean so much.

That narrative aligns with the Raiders’ broader strategy: stabilize the quarterback position with a prospect who can operate efficiently, lead consistently, and grow within a structured framework.

Why Mendoza's Combine Comments Feel Different This Time

Prospects routinely praise interviews. What makes this situation different is the context.

The Raiders need a quarterback. Mendoza has been widely connected to them. And his Combine remarks didn’t distance himself from that conversation; they leaned into it.

As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, the league’s worst-kept secret is less than two months away from its formal announcement.
