Chicago Bears Detail Next Steps in Caleb Williams Contract Extension

Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles explained what needs to happen before Caleb Williams signs a long-term contract extension, outlining the team’s quarterback strategy for 2026 and beyond.

The Chicago Bears are not rushing a contract extension for Caleb Williams, but they are clearly thinking ahead.

At the NFL Combine, general manager Ryan Poles outlined the organization's view of Williams’ long-term trajectory.

“Anyone that’s watched the league long enough knows that for quarterback play, it’s consistency,” Poles said, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. “Can you stack years on top of each other? We still have steps to go. I don’t want to make it like he’s already [there]. He knows he’s got work to do. But if all of that falls into place, we have to understand how that changes our formula as we move forward. That’s a great thing to be on that path. I feel like we have a long-term quarterback solution. It makes me excited.”

Poles emphasized “stacking years.” In other words, he's not chasing flashes. He wants sustained production.

“I hope eventually to have a quarterback situation, too, where we’ve got to pay a young quarterback,” he said. “We’re getting closer and closer to clarity on that side of things.”

Williams showed tangible growth throughout the 2025 season. He improved his decision-making late in the year and helped guide Chicago to an NFC North title and a Divisional Round appearance. He displayed playmaking ability under pressure while navigating a developing offensive structure.

But Poles made it clear that the extension conversation depends on consistency.

The quarterback market resets annually. Elite passers now command north of $50 million per year. Once Chicago commits to that level, roster-building formulas change. Cap allocation tightens. Draft flexibility becomes critical.

Poles understands that pivot point.

He referenced how a confirmed franchise quarterback alters long-term strategy. Teams with stability under center can structure contracts aggressively and front-load resources elsewhere.

The Chicago Bears still benefit from Caleb Williams’ rookie contract window. That flexibility allowed Chicago to reinforce multiple positions during its 2025 playoff run. However, next year this time, it'll be a different story.

Poles believes the Bears have their long-term solution at the game's most important position. He also expects continued development from Williams so that when those contract extension discussions eventually begin, there will be no doubt that No. 18 deserves top-of-the-market money.

The Chicago Bears' future hinges on stacking seasons. If Caleb Williams delivers in 2026, the extension framework will take care of itself.
