Latest Trade Proposal Puts a Key Bears Playmaker on the Block

With roster and cap decisions looming, one bold trade proposal could signal a major shift in Chicago’s offensive plans.

Bleacher Report floated an idea that would’ve sounded crazy a year ago: the Chicago Bears trading Cole Kmet to the Carolina Panthers.

The proposed return? A 2026 fifth-round pick (No. 157).

At first glance, that feels light. But when you zoom out, it becomes more complicated.

Carolina’s side of the equation is easy to understand. Bryce Young is entering Year 4 of his rookie contract, and the Panthers will soon have to decide on his fifth-year option. The evaluation window is shrinking. Dave Canales needs weapons around Young to get a true read on what he is, and what he isn’t.

The Panthers drafted Tetairoa McMillan to boost the receiving corps, but no other Carolina receiver topped 400 yards last season. A reliable, middle-of-the-field tight end would stabilize the offense. That’s where Kmet fits.

Outside of his rookie year and 2025, Kmet has eclipsed 400 receiving yards every season. He’s a dependable target, a physical red-zone presence, and an underrated blocker. He’s not flashy, but he’s steady. For a young quarterback, that matters.

Why would the Bears trade Cole Kmet?

Colston Loveland changed the playing field.

The 2025 first-round pick emerged as the Bears’ primary tight end by the end of the season, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. His versatility and explosive traits have made him the focal point at the position.

Kmet, meanwhile, carries a meaningful 2026 cap hit. Moving him would create financial flexibility, and for a team operating within a two-year window before Caleb Williams’ fifth-year option kicks in, every dollar matters.

The return — a fifth-rounder — isn’t exciting. But Day 3 picks are currency for roster depth, and Chicago may view cap relief as the real asset in this scenario.

For Carolina, it’s a low-risk bet on a proven contributor. For Chicago, it’s a business decision.
