New York Giants coach John Harbaugh says he’d be just fine with Big Blue taking Ohio State safety Caleb Downs in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

New York Giants coach John Harbaugh isn’t hiding how he feels about Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.

When asked about the possibility of the Giants selecting Downs in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Big Blue's new head coach made it clear he’d have no problem with it. Harbaugh, who has long valued versatility and instincts in the secondary, praised the Buckeyes standout as the type of defender who impacts winning.

“We favor Hall of Fame safeties, so if we have a chance to draft a potential future Hall of Fame safety in Caleb Downs, that would be just fine with me,” Harbaugh said on The Mike Francesa Podcast. “We’ll take the best player. When you draft that high, you take the best player. It’s not a need pick, it’s a best player pick because you’re going for the guy that’s going to be that kind of player. You’re talking about a player that you would like to see someday wearing a gold jacket if possible.”

That’s high praise coming from a coach whose defenses have consistently ranked among the league’s best.

Downs backed up the hype in 2025. He finished the season with 68 total tackles, to interceptions, and two passes defended while serving as the centerpiece of Ohio State’s secondary. His range, processing speed, and ability to play both deep safety and in the box have made him one of the most complete defensive backs in this draft class.

It’s easy to see why Harbaugh would endorse the fit.

The Giants have been looking to stabilize their secondary, and Downs’ versatility would allow New York to disguise coverages and rotate post-snap, traits that translate immediately to the NFL. He’s not just a centerfielder; he’s a tone-setter.

What stands out most about Downs isn’t just production. It’s polish. His angles in pursuit, ball skills, and communication skills suggest a player who won’t need a long adjustment period.

If the New York Giants pull the trigger in Round 1, Harbaugh clearly believes it would be a smart move.

And given his track record evaluating defensive talent, that endorsement carries weight.
