Chicago Bears left tackle Braxton Jones was long considered a candidate to begin 2025 training camp on the physically unable to perform list. But that won't be the case, according to general manager Ryan Poles, who met with the media on Tuesday.
Instead, Jones is good to go for the start of camp, although a ramp-up period is required. He hasn't participated in any football activities since fracturing his ankle in December.
Braxton Jones facing competition for starting job
However, it wasn't all great news for Jones. Coach Ben Johnson confirmed the Bears will have a three-way competition for the starting left tackle job between Jones, Ozzy Trapilo, and Kiran Amegadjie. He called it a 'blank slate' as training camp kicks off.
"I would like to think his experience will help him," Johnson said, "but we're coming in with blank slates right now."
Jones is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He has a lot of money on the line. If he resumes his role as the Chicago Bears LT1 and puts together another good season of film, he'll set himself up for a massive payday.
Jones has started all 40 games he's played for the Bears, and is generally considered one of the more underrated left tackles in the NFL.
Regardless of who wins the starting job, Braxton Jones is likely entering his final season as a Bear. This team is that high on Trapilo.
At the very least, the Bears' offensive line depth certainly got a boost with the good news of Jones' health.
Now, may the best man win the left tackle competition.
