Ranking the 4 best moves the Chicago Bears made this offseason
What were the best moves Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles made this offseason?
The Chicago Bears made franchise-altering moves this offseason. General manager Ryan Poles acquired players both through the draft and free agency that should positively impact the Bears’ performance in 2024. Poles especially made sweeping changes to the offensive supporting cast that will surround No. 1 overall quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Bears appear positioned to legitimately contend for the NFC North division title this season. It’s been an outstanding offseason at Halas Hall. With the majority of roster churning in our rearview mirror, we’ve identified the four-most noteworthy decisions made by the Bears this offseason.
1. Drafting Caleb Williams
Nothing tops drafting a generational quarterback with the No. 1 overall selection. Williams is expected to alter the Bears’ fate in relation to past failures with young quarterbacks. Williams is a dual-threat signal caller that thrives both inside and outside the pocket. Poles has surrounded Williams with the high-level weapons required to lead to instant success.
2. Trading for Keenan Allen
Poles signaled his aggressive intentions by executing a blockbuster trade for wide receive Keenan Allen. Pairing Allen with D.J. Moore gives Williams a pair of veteran receivers he can rely on. The former Los Angeles Charger is among the best route runners in the entire league. The Bears should field an explosive offense in 2024.
3. Signing Jaylon Johnson to an extension
Don’t let Jaylon Johnson’s contract extension get lost in the shuffle of all the dazzling offseason additions. Johnson is an elite cornerback that was involved in a contract-related standoff with the Bears. Poles eventually signed him to a four-year, $76 million extension.
It was a shrewd negotiation by Poles considering Johnson isn’t a top-five paid cornerback from a total value or annual average salary perspective. He ranks seventh among cornerbacks in both of those categories. Retaining Johnson for the foreseeable future was a massive victory for Poles.
4. Drafting Rome Odunze
And finally, Poles completed the makeover of the Bears’ wide receiver depth chart by drafting Rome Odunze at No. 9 overall. Allen may be a short-term solution in Chicago given his advancing age. Landing Odunze, one of the top-ranked players on Poles’ board, ensures the Bears will roster multiple pass-catching weapons for years to come. Watching Williams and Odunze grow together will be a fruitful experience.
