The moment the Chicago Bears secured the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it was obvious: GM Ryan Poles would select his quarterback and, one way or another, end the Justin Fields era.

Bears fans hoped Chicago would net more than a late Day-3 pick in 2025 from the Pittsburgh Steelers for Fields, but the fact Poles accepted Pittsburgh's offer was, in part, motivated by his desire to clear the runway for Caleb Williams, the expected first overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

But before Williams could be deemed a lock for that first pick, the Bears had to do their due diligence, which usually includes player visits, medicals, and more.

In the case of the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams, none of that was necessary for Poles to pull the trigger on a Fields trade and roll the dice on Williams as his guy. It was a surprising gamble by Poles. It even shocked Williams.

“I was in the car. I was driving to a business meeting. I’m listening to music. I’m bobbing my head. I probably got on Drake. I’m chilling," Williams said during a recent appearance on "The Pivot." 'I’m in West Hollywood driving to a business meeting and all I see is my phone explodes. Whether it’s actual regular fans or whether it’s ESPN or whatever the case may be. I pick up my phone, and it’s going off, and I’m trying to figure out because it went from nothing to maybe a couple texts to phone. I end up calling a couple people and was just like, ‘Welp, we know where their mind and heart is at in this instance.’ Let’s prepare and get ready and handle things accordingly and still do our due diligence on the situation and things like that.

And it wasn't particularly close.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Jackson finished with a 91.7 overall defensive grade, including an 80.0 run-defense grade and 78.9 tackling grade.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Jamree Kromah's breakout looks even better after PFF grades\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>If there was one Bears defender everyone noticed Saturday, it was Kromah. PFF noticed him, too.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Kromah's 84.3 overall grade\x3Cstrong> \x3C/strong>ranked second on Chicago's defense. He also earned a 78.2 run-defense grade and 75.8 tackling grade.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The numbers complement what was already an outstanding box-score performance. Kromah finished with six tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Ben Johnson praised Kromah afterward for his get-off and relentlessness, saying the Bears could feel his presence throughout the game.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>There's always a temptation to overreact to a preseason breakout, particularly when it comes from a player battling at the bottom of the roster. But Kromah is making that increasingly difficult.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The Bears need depth along their defensive front. If Kromah continues playing like this, he might be transforming the conversation from whether he'll make the roster to how many snaps he can earn.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Beanie Bishop Jr.'s two interceptions lead to strong grade\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>It's difficult to have a more productive day in the secondary than Bishop did.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Bishop intercepted both Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel as Chicago's defense took control of the game, helping the Bears finish with three takeaways. PFF gave Bishop an 82.4 overall grade, third-best on the defense, along with an\x3Cstrong> \x3C/strong>88.2 coverage grade.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Bishop's opportunities matter more than they might have when training camp began because Chicago's secondary has already taken significant injury hits. Coby Bryant underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss months, while Kyler Gordon has missed substantial practice time. There's no projected return date, either.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The Bears need more depth; Bishop just gave them a reason to believe he can provide some.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Bears' defensive line produces several encouraging grades\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>Kromah wasn't alone up front. James Lynch finished fifth on the defense with a 75.9 overall grade, while Daniel Hardy checked in eighth at 70.5.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Rookie Jordan van den Berg continued his encouraging summer with a 69.1 overall grade, placing him 12th among Bears defenders. Perhaps more importantly, PFF gave van den Berg an 83.3 tackling grade. Even Dayo Odeyingbo finished at 69.5 in limited work.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The defensive front entered training camp as one of the biggest question marks on the roster. The Bears need players beyond their established starters to emerge, and Saturday offered at least some evidence that they might have more usable depth than initially expected.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>PFF wasn't impressed by several notable Bears defenders\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>Not every grade was encouraging.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Rookie first-round pick Dillon Thieneman finished 24th with a 52.4 overall grade, while Josh Blackwell landed immediately behind him at 52.0.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Blackwell's grade included an 87.2 run-defense mark, but his 43.9 coverage grade dragged down his overall score.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Austin Booker finished 23rd with a 53.7 overall grade over just eight defensive snaps, making his performance difficult to draw sweeping conclusions from.\x3C/p>",excerpt:"The Bears' defensive PFF grades from their preseason win over the Browns feature huge performances from D'Marco Jackson, Jamree Kromah and Beanie Bishop Jr.",featured_image_url:"https://jxsasjkteolpvwybngyp.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/sign/cms-media/posts/1786976488535-obwblc.avif?token=eyJraWQiOiJzdG9yYWdlLXVybC1zaWduaW5nLWtleV80ZmVjZWU3MC03MmJkLTQzZmUtYmJkZi04MGJiZDE2MmEwNTkiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJ1cmwiOiJjbXMtbWVkaWEvcG9zdHMvMTc4Njk3NjQ4ODUzNS1vYndibGMuYXZpZiIsInNjb3BlIjoiZG93bmxvYWQiLCJpYXQiOjE3ODY5NzY0ODksImV4cCI6MjEwMjMzNjQ4OX0.4WQXME8uOc8qbt2F5GV80QXQqjiPxKnLExN-Twm_lJE",photo_credit:null,status:"published",created_at:"2026-08-17T14:12:40.442874+00:00",author_display_name:"Bryan Perez",author_gravatar_hash:"ce9d5105163cfec1a527c0b2f50332df",author_avatar_url:"/api/public/media/authors/bryanjperez-2026.jpg",category_names:$R[18]=["News"],tags:$R[19]=["Chicago Bears","NFL preseason","PFF grades"],meta_title:"Chicago Bears' defensive PFF grades from preseason win vs. Browns",meta_description:"The Bears' defensive PFF grades from their preseason win over the Browns feature huge performances from D'Marco Jackson, Jamree Kromah and Beanie Bishop Jr.",og_image_url:null,canonical_url:null,focus_keyword:"Chicago Bears",reading_time_minutes:3,is_draft:!1,scheduled_publish_at:null,visibility:"public",is_featured:!1},$R[20]={id:"aadc1d92-c9e0-4012-af2e-faa7a362f2ce",wp_post_id:100000000077,title:"Bears' PFF grades on offense reveal standouts and major concern at left tackle",slug:"chicago-bears-offense-pff-grades-browns-preseason",wp_link:null,url_date_path:"2026/08/17",published_at:"2026-08-17T14:06:59.441+00:00",updated_at:"2026-08-17T14:06:59.441+00:00",author_login:"bryanjperez",content:"\x3Cp>The Chicago Bears couldn't have asked for a much better final score in their preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. PFF rewarded him with an 86.7 overall offensive grade and an 80.2 passing grade, both easily strong enough to put him atop the Bears' offensive rankings.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>His performance came after Tyson Bagent started and played the first half.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Bagent completed 13 of 22 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but PFF wasn't nearly as impressed. His 46.6 overall grade ranked 24th among the 27 Bears offensive players graded.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>That doesn't necessarily mean Chicago suddenly has a quarterback controversy behind Caleb Williams. Bagent faced different personnel and circumstances than Keenum.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Still, Keenum couldn't have made a much stronger first impression.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Ray-Ray McCloud immediately makes his presence felt\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>One of the Bears' newest additions also produced one of their highest grades.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>McCloud earned a 74.2 overall grade, second only to Keenum. His 73.6 receiving grade also reflected an encouraging debut shortly after joining Chicago's crowded receiver room.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>McCloud's experience as both a receiver and return specialist gives him multiple ways to earn a roster spot, and his first preseason opportunity certainly didn't hurt.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Offensive tackle Mason Murphy ranked third at 74.1, followed by JP Richardson and Salvon Ahmed, who tied at 73.6.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Ahmed's grade shouldn't surprise anyone who watched the game. The veteran running back turned five touches into 72 yards from scrimmage, including a 49-yard touchdown reception from Keenum. His performance earned a 74.9 rushing grade and 72.1 receiving grade.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Ben Johnson said after the game that Ahmed's \"slashing mentality\" has shown up throughout camp. The Bears coach also made it clear that special teams and pass protection will ultimately help determine the roster battle behind D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The PFF grade provides another piece of evidence supporting Ahmed's case.\x3C/p>\x3Cimg class=\"my-4 rounded\" src=\"https://jxsasjkteolpvwybngyp.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/sign/cms-media/posts/1786975581070-las1hw.avif?token=eyJraWQiOiJzdG9yYWdlLXVybC1zaWduaW5nLWtleV80ZmVjZWU3MC03MmJkLTQzZmUtYmJkZi04MGJiZDE2MmEwNTkiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJ1cmwiOiJjbXMtbWVkaWEvcG9zdHMvMTc4Njk3NTU4MTA3MC1sYXMxaHcuYXZpZiIsInNjb3BlIjoiZG93bmxvYWQiLCJpYXQiOjE3ODY5NzU1ODIsImV4cCI6MjEwMjMzNTU4Mn0.mfq1DZ8_TrXNtqvpozhAP298yGnYyC7ZlvESCUSfydg\" alt=\"Kaden Davis\">\x3Cp>(Photo by Geoff Stellfox/Getty Images)\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Kaden Davis continues making his roster case\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>Kaden Davis was one of the most productive Bears on the field Saturday, and his PFF grade backed it up.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Davis earned a 72.6 overall grade\x3Cstrong> \x3C/strong>and 71.4 receiving grade, ranking seventh on the offense. Salvon Ahmed flashed his explosiveness. Jamree Kromah wreaked havoc. Beanie Bishop Jr. intercepted two passes.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>But preseason football isn't only about identifying winners. There were some duds, too.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>For players fighting for starting jobs or spots on the 53-man roster, every opportunity matters. And while one August performance shouldn't dramatically alter the Bears' plans, several players left Soldier Field with more to prove.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Jedrick Wills Jr.\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>The Bears wanted Saturday to provide some clarity in their unsettled left tackle competition. And, well, it might have.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Just not in the way Wills hoped.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Wills and Kiran Amegadjie were expected to receive close to equal work after offensive line coach Dan Roushar said their performances had been relatively even during training camp. Neither emerged from the game as a dominant option, but Wills had the more concerning afternoon, including getting beaten for a sack. It was the worst play of the game for the Bears.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>That's a problem for Wills.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The former Browns first-round pick was signed to give Chicago another legitimate option at left tackle, and preseason games are particularly important for an offensive lineman trying to prove he's ready for a starting role. Especially one who's returning from injury.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>One bad rep isn't enough to eliminate Wills from consideration. But he needed Saturday to strengthen his case. Instead, the door remains wide open.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>And with Jones expected to rejoin the competition, Wills can't afford many more missed opportunities.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Roschon Johnson\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>Salvon Ahmed had himself a day, and that's bad news for Roschon Johnson.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Ahmed turned five offensive touches into 72 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown reception from Keenum. Afterward, Ben Johnson confirmed that the Bears feel good about their top two running backs and said the competition for the remaining spots will come down to special teams and finding ways to separate.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Ahmed separated Saturday. Roschon didn't.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>That's particularly concerning because this isn't a competition for a featured role. D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai are firmly positioned atop the depth chart. Everyone behind them is fighting for a finite number of roster spots, and offensive touches won't necessarily determine who survives cutdown day.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Johnson's physical running style and special-teams ability still give him a path to the roster. But when another player competing for the same job turns five touches into an explosive performance, the pressure increases.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>Anyone fighting Jamree Kromah for a defensive line roster spot\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>Sometimes your stock falls without you doing anything particularly wrong. Sometimes another guy just has a better day.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>That's what happened to every edgte rusher competing with Kromah for one of the final spots on Chicago's roster.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Kromah recorded two sacks, forced a fumble and recovered it himself. Ben Johnson praised his get-off and relentlessness afterward, saying the Bears could \"feel his presence every snap.\"\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Now, that doesn't mean he's made the team. But it does mean the math just became more difficult for everyone competing against him.\x3C/p>\x3Ch2>It's only one preseason game, but these reps matter\x3C/h2>\x3Cp>There's an obvious disclaimer with every preseason stock report. It's one game.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>Wills hasn't lost the left tackle competition. Roschon Johnson hasn't been cut. And the Bears aren't going to reconstruct the bottom of their roster based exclusively on 60 minutes against Cleveland.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>But the preseason exists for evaluation, and Ahmed took advantage of his opportunity. So did Kromah.\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The Bears who didn't now have fewer opportunities remaining to answer. That's what makes the next couple of weeks so interesting.\x3C/p>",excerpt:"Chicago rolled past Cleveland 34-10, but several Bears left the preseason opener with more to prove as roster and position battles intensify.",featured_image_url:"https://jxsasjkteolpvwybngyp.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/sign/cms-media/posts/1786890160778-qucj0d.webp?token=eyJraWQiOiJzdG9yYWdlLXVybC1zaWduaW5nLWtleV80ZmVjZWU3MC03MmJkLTQzZmUtYmJkZi04MGJiZDE2MmEwNTkiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJ1cmwiOiJjbXMtbWVkaWEvcG9zdHMvMTc4Njg5MDE2MDc3OC1xdWNqMGQud2VicCIsInNjb3BlIjoiZG93bmxvYWQiLCJpYXQiOjE3ODY4OTAxNjEsImV4cCI6MjEwMjI1MDE2MX0.auSOtdOewo4MpuqVONcP5_MRt0_djq9rtdy-oQLAzr8",photo_credit:null,status:"published",created_at:"2026-08-16T14:13:33.880565+00:00",author_display_name:"Bryan Perez",author_gravatar_hash:"ce9d5105163cfec1a527c0b2f50332df",author_avatar_url:"/api/public/media/authors/bryanjperez-2026.jpg",category_names:$R[30]=["News"],tags:$R[31]=["chicago bears","nfl preseason"],meta_title:"Bears whose stock fell after preseason win vs. Browns",meta_description:"Chicago rolled past Cleveland 34-10, but several Bears left the preseason opener with more to prove as roster and position battles intensify.",og_image_url:null,canonical_url:null,focus_keyword:"Bears",reading_time_minutes:3,is_draft:!1,scheduled_publish_at:null,visibility:"public",is_featured:!1}]},ssr:!0}],lastMatchId:"$year$month$day$slug20240421caleb-williams-surprised-chicago-bears-trade-justin-fields-nfl-draft"})($R["tsr"]);$_TSR.e();document.currentScript.remove()
