Just when you thought we were beginning to understand the Chicago Bears quarterback situation, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on NFL Live Wednesday night and dropped a subtle yet important nugget of information on what's happening inside Halas Hall.
"The Bears said at the Combine they'd like to get a deal in place by the time the new league year opens, which is one week from today," Schefter said. "The Bears are on the clock.
"I think there are people within the organization that would like to see him stay there too, which is one more wrench to throw in there."
That's more than a wrench, Adam! That's like rolling a grenade into a room and casually strolling away.
It's no surprise that the Chicago Bears front office could be divided over what to do with Fields. Perhaps what we're seeing occur in Bears Twitter -- the Bears Fan Civil War -- is happening inside Halas Hall, too. I want to think that isn't the case, but Fields is a good dude. And there's no doubt he has plenty of front-office members in his corner.
Regardless, I can't see any way Ryan Poles doesn't select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He's too talented to pass up. Poles won't take that chance, especially after passing on CJ Stroud in the 2023 NFL Draft.
