REPORT: Bears would need HISTORIC compensation to trade No. 1 pick (NFL Draft)

The Chicago Bears are expected to make a significant trade (again) this offseason. However, we don't know whether that trade will involve the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft or quarterback Justin Fields.

If the Bears keep the pick, they will likely select USC quarterback Caleb Williams. And, if they keep the pick, Fields will be dealt to the highest bidder.

We may have gained some clarity on which way GM Ryan Poles is leaning on Saturday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Chicago Bears would need "historic compensation" to trade the first pick.

"Chicago would need a historic haul of draft picks and overall compensation to move off the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, sources say," Rapoport wrote. "In the words of one source, it would have to be 'crazy.'"

So, in a draft year with a potentially generational quarterback, the team with the first overall pick is letting the NFL know that a trade would require a 'historic haul' of compensation. I don't know about you, but that sure sounds to me like Poles is leaning hard toward Caleb Williams.

As much as Chicago Bears fans love Justin Fields (and for good reason), it's hard to imagine a football universe in which Poles doesn't select Williams. The further removed we get from the 2023 season, the more obvious the choice becomes. And now that we have an idea of the Bears' asking price (is it really an asking price?) to trade the first pick, it feels like the decision-makers in Halas Hall are realizing the same thing.
