Bears WR DJ Moore should see boost in production as a result of this key factor
Chicago Bears WR DJ Moore has a knack for doing what Ben Johnson’s offense calls for.
Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore appeared destined to rewrite the team’s receiving record book after his first season in Chicago in 2023. He ended that year with 96 catches for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns despite QB Justin Fields not lighting the league on fire as a passer.
Naturally, when the Bears selected Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, expectations for Moore’s production went even higher. Unfortunately, he fell victim to the curse of Shane Waldron and ended last year with just 966 yards and six scores.
However, Moore’s outlook for 2025 is as high as it has ever been in his career, thanks to Ben Johnson taking over as head coach and offensive playcaller. Johnson led the Detroit Lions to some of the most explosive offenses over the last three years, and with the cast of skill players he has at his disposal in Chicago, it’s expected he’ll do the same this year.
Moore should be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Johnson coming to town, and there’s a sneaky reason why.
Bears on SI’s Gene Chamberlain recently broke down a list of reasons to feel good about Moore’s upcoming campaign and noted how his ability to gain yards after the catch marries well with Johnson’s scheme.

“Johnson’s offense schemes receivers more open and as a result, they led the NFL in yards after catch last year, were sixth in 2023 and fourth in 2022,” Chamberlain wrote. “Moore is usually one of the best run-after-catch receivers in the league anyway. Even in bad offenses he rates up there. He was sixth in the league last year, 13th the previous year with Luke Getsy’s offense, 12th in 2021 in Carolina.”

Moore has always reminded me of a Deebo Samuel-type talent, and we’ve seen what Samuel can do when he has a playcaller who knows the right way to use him. Namely, get him the ball in space and let him do his thing after the catch.
With Johnson in charge of Chicago’s offense in 2025 and Moore representing the closest thing on the roster to what he had in Detroit with Amon-Ra St. Brown, you can expect a lot of forced touches to the Bears’ WR1. Not only will Moore produce as a result, but the workload is certain to keep him happy and engaged, too.
Moore’s production and unique usage should pull coverage away from Rome Odunze, too, allowing the second-year wideout to reach his first-round upside as well.
