Pro Football Focus gives Bears B- for Tremaine Edmunds signing
Pro Football Focus was lukewarm on the Chicago Bears’ decision to sign linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in 2023 NFL free agency.
Pro Football Focus isn’t as big of a fan of the Chicago Bears’ signing of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds as we are, apparently. You can check out our grade here.
Pro Football Focus gave the transaction a value grade of B-.
“The Bears make their second splash of the day at linebacker, adding Tremaine Edmunds, who ranked first among linebackers in coverage grade this past season (90.0).
“Edmunds had a rough first four years in the league — he made splash plays here and there but a lack of consistency held him back,” PFF wrote. “He really seemed to put it together in 2022, though, and if he can maintain that level of play the Bears will be in good shape with him and T.J. Edwards at the position.”

Perspective required when evaluating Tremaine Edmunds
It’s a good perspective on Edmunds, who, as PFF noted, took some time to develop before his breakout as one of the NFL’s top young linebackers. Remember: he’s only 24 years old. He was the same age as many college seniors during the first few years of his pro career.
Pro Football Focus gave the Tremaine Edmunds signing a “B” for their fit/need grade, which should make Chicago Bears fans feel a little better.
The bottom line is this: The Bears needed to add a player like Edmunds, whose incredible athletic traits will shine in coach Matt Eberflus” defense. Indeed, he hasn’t been one of the NFL’s most dominant linebackers over the last five seasons, but he’s gotten better year after year. As he enters his prime, he’ll play in a perfect system for his traits. The sky’s the limit.
And the Bears are betting on him reaching it. Edmunds is in Chicago to be a foundational piece of their rebuilding effort on defense.
