Scouting Report
After passing for over 11,000 yds and becoming a star of the Netflix show QB1 Spencer Rattler was probably the biggest star in high school football and the most in-demand recruit in the 2017 class. Rattler chose the Sooners over an array of other suiters.
In 2019 as a freshman Rattler saw action in just 3 games for Oklahoma as he threw for 81 yards on 11 attempts with a completion percent of 63.6 for an average of 7.4 yards per pass, with one TD, while taking no sacks and a QB rating of 116.1.
He redshirted that mostly unproductive year, and in 2020 as a redshirt freshman, was handed the starting job. He played in 11 games as he passed for 3031 yards on 317 attempts with a completion percent of 67.5 for an average of 9.6 yards per pass, with 28 TDs, while also taking 24 sacks, and putting up a QB rating of 118.4. He added 63 runs for a total of 280 yards at an average of 4.4 per rush.
After this impressive season as the Sooner’s starter Rattler was named national freshman of the year by CBS Sports, became the second OU quarterback to be named an FWAA Freshman All-American (after Sam Bradford), was awarded a first-team AP All-Big 12 selection and the organization’s co-Big 12 newcomer of the year.
As much as 2020 was a showcase for Rattler’s skills and a justification for his consensus five-star rating 2021 was the opposite after he was benched as a result of turning the ball over twice against Texas. He returned to play in a limited capacity but the damage was done as was to all intents and purposes Rattler’s time as a Sooner. He finished the year passing for just 1483 yards on 190 attempts and 11 TDs with 5 INTs and was sacked 12 times. Rattler opted to enter the transfer protocol where he joined South Carolina in an attempt to resurrect his career and ultimately his draft stock.
As a senior Rattler saw action in 12 games as he threw for an excellent 2791 yards on 356 attempts with a completion percentage of 66% for an average of 7.8 yards per pass, with a solid 16 TDs, while taking 26 sacks, and totaling a QB rating of 91.9. He added 42 runs for a total of 176 yards at an average of 4.2 per run.
