Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy will be the head coach of the American team at the 2023 Senior Bowl, the all-star game announced Wednesday. Getsy joins Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham (National team) in the first year that the Senior Bowl won’t utilize complete coaching staffs.
In an effort to promote professional development, the NFL implemented the coaching staff change to allow coordinators and assistant coaches an opportunity to serve in a head coaching capacity. The Bears nominated Getsy, and he was selected by a group of league office executives, Senior Bowl leadership, and reps from the General Managers Advisory Committee.
“I am extremely honored to be selected as the head coach for the American Team in the 74th Senior Bowl,” Getsy said in a statement Wednesday. “It is a privilege to be able to work alongside my peers from around the league and to be able to lead this special group of men that are the future of the NFL. Thank you to everyone at the Senior Bowl for this awesome opportunity and I look forward to a great week in Mobile.”
Luke Getsy’s presence on the practice field and in the meeting rooms will give the Chicago Bears a massive advantage in their 2023 NFL Draft preparation. Senior Bowl coaches come away with advanced intel on prospects, and the all-star game tends to produce a significant chunk of the annual draft class.
The Senior Bowl produced 106 draft picks in 2022 and 40% of the last two total draft classes. Over 87% of Senior Bowl players drafted since 2019 have made 53-man rosters. It’s not a matter of whether the Chicago Bears select a player from the Senior Bowl; it’s how many.

Velus Jones Jr. participated in the 2022 Senior Bowl and became the Bears’ third-round pick last April. Some costly turnovers and concentration lapses marred his rookie season, but he finished the year strong with back-to-back weeks of field-flipping plays.
Luke Getsy is on the fast track to becoming a head coach in the NFL. Another big season from Justin Fields and an improved passing offense will likely land him a job next offseason. The 2023 Senior Bowl is a great audition for him and equally great for the Chicago Bears’ 2023 draft room.
