Bears have chance to turn up the heat on Trey Lance, 49ers (2022 Season)

The Chicago Bears and San Francsico 49ers aren’t all that different. Sure, the 49ers are beginning the 2022 season with playoff expectations while the Bears are consistently ranked among the NFL’s worst clubs. But both teams’ short- and long-term futures rest squarely on the right arms of 2021 first-round quarterbacks, Justin Fields and Trey Lance.

The offseason chatter around the Bears focused on general manager Ryan Poles’ apparent failure to put Fields in a position to succeed in his second season. Lance, meanwhile, will throw passes to All-Pro targets like Deebo Samuel and George Kittle while having the NFL’s best offensive tackle, Trent Williams, blocking his blindside. But it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies for Lance, who unlike Fields, has an established veteran in Jimmy Garoppolo behind him on the depth chart.

The 49ers brought Garoppolo back on a reduced contract after trade speculation dominated the last several months. Perhaps, San Francisco couldn’t find a deal they liked. But there’s also a chance that Lance hasn’t impressed enough for coach Kyle Shanahan to fully commit to the former No. 3 overall pick.

In Sunday’s season opener at Soldier Field, the Bears defense can turn up the heat on Lance (and Shanahan) if they fool the young quarterback into errant throws and turnovers. The good news for Lance is his first game is on the road, no boo-birds. The bad news? Jimmy G.

“We all know how it’ll go,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “I also know if Jimmy wasn’t here and Trey did bad how it would go. So we understand that. The fact that he has this successful quarterback behind him, that’s obvious how that narrative will be and understandably so.”

Trey Lance’s inexperience gives Bears defense a big advantage

Week 1’s matchup favors the Bears defense. Lance hasn’t opened a football season as a starter since his time at North Dakota State in 2020 (The Bison played only one game in the COVID-shortened season). He’s only thrown 101 passes since 2020, including just 71 in the NFL. That inexperience, combined with the effective coverage disguises and aggressive third-down approach of Matt Eberflus’ defenses, is a recipe for disaster for Lance.

“To affect the quarterback, you can do it with pressure and you can also do it with your pre-snap alignment and personnel,” linebacker Nicholas Morrow said, via the Chicago Tribune. “I think that helps you and takes away from you having to use a five- or six-man pressure when you affect the quarterback with so many different coverages.”

There’s already some unwanted attention on Lance as the 2022 season kicks off. He wasn’t selected as one of the 49ers” six captains (he was seventh in voting). Fields, meanwhile, is one of Chicago’s four permanent captains in 2022.

“That’s a goal of mine,” Justin Fields will feel the heat in opener, too

Fields will be under intense pressure Sunday, too. It’ll just be a different kind. Rather than feeling the heat of an established veteran quarterback behind him, he’ll be feeling it from Nick Bosa, whose 15.5 sacks trailed only Robert Quinn’s 18.5 in the NFC last year. Bosa will face off against rookie fifth-round pick Braxton Jones in a matchup that could erase offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s gameplan.

If Fields struggles because the Bears” offensive line fails, in a way, it’ll be OK. It can be explained. It won’t be his fault, at least, not entirely. Lance, meanwhile, has an established offensive line and likely won’t have that excuse. Instead, his struggles will be his own.

“Players need to realize that, just like their position, it happens at the quarterback position too. You’re not going to be perfect. … You have to realize when you do struggle, those guys know it’s a lot harder to play well when no one has your back. You have to help guys through that. I think we’ve got the guys who can do that.”
