Chicago Bears place WR Chase Claypool on PUP list

Chicago Bears wide receiver Chase Claypool has been the target of criticism this offseason after a disappointing half-season with the Bears last year. His offseason program didn’t end well when he missed several on-field sessions due to what the team described as a soft-tissue injury.

That soft-tissue injury may not be fully healed. The Bears placed Claypool on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP) at the start of 2023 training camp.

The Bears have placed WR Chase Claypool on the PUP list.

The Lions have placed WR Marvin Jones on the non-football injury list.

The Broncos have placed WR K.J. Hamler on the non-football injury list.

Claypool totaled just 14 catches for 140 yards and zero touchdowns with the Bears in 2022. Chicago responded by trading for DJ Moore this offseason, and Darnell Mooney, who hasn’t been placed on the PUP list, appears fully recovered from a late-season ankle injury.

The Chicago Bears traded their 2023 second-round pick for Claypool, which turned out to be the 32nd overall selection. The late-first-round sacrifice only added to the pressure already on Claypool to live up to the price the Bears paid to acquire him.

This isn’t the start Bears fans were hoping for from Claypool. Perhaps it will be a short stint on the PUP list. The more time he misses in training camp, the less the Bears can count on him at the start of the regular season.
