Adam Schefter says Bears could get first-round pick for Justin Fields
The Chicago Bears might get much more than you think in a trade for Justin Fields.
The Chicago Bears are expected to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, which means Justin Fields, the team’s current starting quarterback, will be traded this offseason.
Most NFL analysts assume the trade compensation for Fields will be similar to what the New York Jets received for Sam Darnold. The Jets traded Darnold to the Carolina Panthers during the 2021 offseason for a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and second- and fourth-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. It was a good haul for Darnold, who had underperformed in three seasons with the Jets.
Perhaps a quarterback-needy team like the Atlanta Falcons or Pittsburgh Steelers will consider a similar deal for Justin Fields. Or, maybe Fields will land the Bears a lot more in a trade.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the trade market for Fields is at least a second-round pick. In a recent appearance on ESPN 1000, Schefter said he wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears landed a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
“Definitely,” Schefter said when asked if the Bears would get a second-round pick for Fields. “I think they might get a 1.”
As for which team might be willing to part with their first-round pick for Fields?
“Just look at all the teams that need quarterbacks and put them all on a piece of paper,” Schefter said.
If the Chicago Bears can get a first-round pick for Justin Fields, it’s an easy decision at No. 1
A big part of the debate surrounding what the Bears should do with the first overall pick is the potential haul they’d receive if they decided to keep Fields and deal the top pick to the highest bidder. Rumors of the Washington Commanders being willing to send two first-round picks to Chicago to move up one spot excite Bears fans, which they should. Chicago could run it back with Justin Fields and select Marvin Harrison, Jr., or take a quarterback like Drake Maye or Jaden Daniels and bolster their draft aresnal in 2025 and beyond.
But if the Bears can land a first-round pick for Fields? At that point, Ryan Poles will have no choice but to take that deal and select Caleb Williams. I already think it’s an easy choice to call Williams’ name with the first pick. Adding an additional first-rounder for Justin Fields makes it an absolute no-brainer.
